Carolyn Samuel was born January 5, 1950, to the parentage of Catherine Samuel and Herbert Keller in Dallas, Texas.
Carolyn was raised and educated in the Dallas area. She was educated in DISD school district. She attended Crispus Attucks Elementary School and Booker T Washington High School.
Carolyn later met and married Guy Oakry. They remained married until his death.
Carolyn enjoyed a long career in the retail foodservice industry. She started her career with Safeway and Tom Thumb grocery stores. Carolyn was employed by Whole Foods for 26 years and retired in October 2016. She was loved by many of her customers, and they affectionately referred to her as “ Ms. C”.
Affectionately regarded as “MeMe” by her grandchildren, Carolyn was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She never met a stranger. She was a joyful, outgoing, sassy, talkative, and vibrant woman. Carolyn was also a giving and generous person but knew when to set limits. She loved her family and enjoyed family dinners and outings.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, Guy Oakry; mother, Catherine Samuel; father, Herbert Keller; and grandmother, Marie Samuel. She leaves to cherish her memory: her son, Derrill D. Samuel; grandson, Datwon McKinzie (Brittany); great-granddaughter, Shanaja McKinzie; great-grandson, Karysin McKinzie; brothers, Richard Gibson (Diane) and James Coit (Annette); aunt, Ruby Terrell (Buckney); uncles: Charles Samuel (Edna), Larry Paul Samuel, and Ronnie Samuel; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
