Bertha Lou Thomas was born on August 16, 1940, in Birmingham, Alabama, to Otis Cox, Sr., and Gertrude (Jones) Cox. Bertha graduated from Pearl High School and continued her education to earn an Associate's Degree in Business Administration. Bertha retired from UT Southwest Medical Center when her health started to decline. Bertha loved everyone and never met a stranger. Bertha received Christ at an early age and was a longstanding member of Greenville Avenue Church of Christ. She loved her church family.
