Brenda Marie Allen was born on April 21, 1949, in Weeks Island, Louisiana, to Willie Mitchell, Sr., and Felicia Wagner Mitchell. From an early age, Brenda radiated kindness, strength, and a deep sense of responsibility—traits that would define her throughout her life.
She graduated from Jonas Henderson Senior High School in New Iberia in 1967. She was known for her sharp mind and gentle spirit. Brenda had a natural gift for listening and helping others, which led her to pursue a degree in Social Work at Grambling State University. She graduated in 1971. It was during her time at Grambling that she met her husband, Victor Allen. Their love blossomed into a 54-year marriage.
Brenda and Victor built a life together in Garland, Texas, where she served as a probation officer for Dallas County. Her work was more than a job—it was a calling. Brenda believed in second chances and treated everyone she encountered with dignity and compassion. She retired in 2008, leaving behind a legacy of service and integrity.
Family was Brenda’s heart. She was a devoted wife, a nurturing mother to Corey and Victoria, a proud grandmother to NiNi, Tae, Kori, Morgan, Saryn, Charjay, and Caiden, and a delighted great-grandmother to Brielle, and a loving mother-in-law to CeCe. Being “Aunt Brenda” brought her endless joy.
Brenda had a way of making everyone feel seen and heard. She made her home a place of warmth, filled with the smell of her famous gumbo. She loved to sew, go shopping, and travel. Her best friends, Velda, Kem, and Jacquelyn Lyons, were like sisters to her, and their bond was a testament to decades of love and loyalty.
Brenda was preceded in death by her father, Willie Mitchell, Sr.; mother, Felicia Wagner Mitchell; brother, Willie Mitchell, Jr.; and nephew, Herman Mitchell, Jr. She leaves behind a loving family who will cherish her memory forever: her husband, Victor Allen; her son, Corey Allen; her beloved daughter, Victoria Allen (Charvo Hunt); her grandchildren, NiNi, Tae, Morgan, Saryn, Kori, Charjay, and Caiden; her great-granddaughter, Brielle; and her daughter-in-law, CeCe.
She also leaves behind her sister, Myrte Batiste of Jeanerette, Louisiana; her brothers, Wilton (Lois) Mitchell of New Iberia, Louisiana, Herman (Camille) Mitchell of New Orleans, Louisiana, Troy (Phylis) Mitchell of Franklin, Louisiana, Donald Sr. (Judith) Mitchell of Broussard, Louisiana, and Darrel Mitchell of Jeanerette, Louisiana; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Brenda showed us how to live with purpose and love without condition. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew her.
