Obituary

Derrick Lavelle Harris was born on April 20, 1974, in San Diego, California. He transitioned to eternity with his Lord on December 30, 2021, in Dallas, Texas.

Affectionately regarded as "Damu", Derrick attended school in San Diego, graduating from Crawford High School in 1992. He was chosen by the Links, Inc. to receive an annual scholarship award for his outstanding achievement in leadership, academic excellence, superior sportsmanship, and artistic skills. He also received recognitions from Mayor Maureen O’Connor and Congressman Randy Cunningham from the U.S. House of Representatives for his outstanding accomplishments. Before leaving for college, he and Aundra Carter were blessed with a beautiful daughter, Alaundra.

Derrick attended East Carolina University where he studied engineering for two years. After college, he worked for RGIS as an inventory specialist in North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, and Texas. Derrick was also a barber and working for Uber and Lyft. He graduated as valedictorian from Grace College of Barbering in 2011.

Derrick later moved to Texas to be close to his daughter and grandchildren. He enjoyed driving trucks across the country and taking time to visit with family and friends in other states and explore as many NFL stadiums as he could. He loved sports and played pop warner football, pee-wee baseball, and high school football and baseball. On Sundays, Derrick could be found watching NFL football and always rooting for his San Diego (now Los Angeles) Chargers. His other passion was astronomy and the study of the stars, which he could do for hours. He loved spending time with his daughter and granddaughters, pursuing his entrepreneurial endeavors, and working on cars.

Having embraced life to the fullest, Derrick leaves a lasting legacy of love. His compassion for others and gift to brighten your days with a smile will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents - William and Shirley Booker, Samuel and Mary Harris, Sr., and Annie Richardson; great-grandparents, Moses and Annie Barnes; and aunts and uncles - Clarence and Annie Fulton, Kelly and Hattie Blount, and Robert Carroll.
