Dorothy Beneva Jones was the fifth child born to Wesley and Willie D. Sherow on October 25, 1929, in Overton, Texas. As a young child, she was active in numerous church activities at Antioch Baptist Church in Henderson, Texas and continued to be a devoted servant of the Lord throughout her life. She became a member of Mount Moriah Baptist Church in the early 1970s, where she served on the usher board, sang in the choir, and participated in the Women’s Ministry and the Women’s Mission outreach. Dorothy made a point to attend services and meetings weekly until she became too ill to attend regularly.
Dorothy married Private First Classman Roy Edwards in 1956, to whom she was married for four years. Roy was later killed in Vietnam less than 6 months before his 20-year retirement. Dorothy later met and married Ozieo Jones to whom she was married to for 54 years until Ozieo’s transition in 2017.
Dorothy graduated from Antioch High School in 1949. She then attended Tyler Junior College and later graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1956 from Texas College in Tyler, Texas. She then moved to Garland, Texas, where she worked at Texas Instruments in Dallas while continuing to pursue her college education in nursing at Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas. However, several years after completing her studies at TWU, she realized that her “true calling” was teaching. Ever determined, Dorothy began to focus on pursuing a higher level of education in order to teach elementary students. She earned a Master of Education degree in 1976 from Stephen F. Austin University. Soon after, she started as a substitute teacher in Garland and Rowlett, and was later hired full-time with Garland Independent School District. After many years of service, she retired.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her loving husband; father; mother; five brothers and three sisters: Reedie, Willie Elena, Jimmie, Robert, George Walter, Floyd, Eva Fay, and Joyce Marie.
Those left to cherish precious memories include her children: Christopher Edwards, Lloyd Edwards, Lerro (Ann) Edwards, and April (Billie) Smith; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren who will continue to treasure her fondly as “MeMaw” and “Grannie”; devoted sister, Rosie Reed; as well as a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
