Elder Michael Mitchell Obituary

Elder Michael Tyrone Mitchell was born on March 3, 1964, in Paris, Texas to proud parents, Jack Mitchell and Roberta Lee Mitchell. Surrounded by his loving family, he transitioned to eternity with his Lord and Savior on January 27, 2023, in Glenn Heights, Texas.

As a child, Michael attended Hospitality Church of God in Christ. He always enjoyed seeing the saints magnifying and praising God. As a teenager, he lived life mingling with the world. God brought him out of that environment and saved him in February 1982, the same year he graduated from Paris High School. He took pleasure in telling the stories about how God saved him.

On August 5, 1982, Michael joined the U.S. Navy (USS Point Loma – AGDS-2) where he met the love of his life, Sherry Lynn Tisdale of Cincinnati Ohio. In 1986, he left the service to marry his beautiful bride.

Michael recommitted his life to Christ on November 4, 1988, at Baldwin Chapel Church of God in Christ under the leadership of the late Superintendent Jack Baldwin. He was filled with the Holy Ghost on September 14, 1989, at Miracle Deliverance Pentecostal Church in Dallas, Texas, under the leadership of the late Pastor Ruby Hall. He was called to ministry in 1990 and preached his first official sermon on Easter that same year. Known as a walking Bible commentary, Michael was ordained under Bishop J. Neaul Haynes in 2010 and became affectionately regarded as "Elder Mitchell". Under the leadership of Superintendent Mark Clemons, he was a faithful member of Pentecost Church of God in Christ in Garland, Texas, where he served as First Assistant Pastor and Sunday School Superintendent. He also served in the Prison Ministry and as Aim President in the Greenville North District under the leadership of Superintendent Anthony V. McCrary, Sr. At the time of his transition, he served as Sunday School Superintendent in the East Side District under the leadership of Superintendent Mark Clemons. He had a relentless passion for ministry and winning souls for Christ.

Outside of ministry, Elder Mitchell's additional passions were education, cooking, drawing, playing tennis, walking 10 miles a day, and spending time with his family and friends. “Uncle Mike”, as he was affectionately regarded by his beloved nieces and nephews, was a tennis league player and would play until the court lights went off. He loved to win.

Elder Mitchell was a “Word Smith”, and people often looked forward to his word of the day. His favorite sayings were, "That's big!" and "Everything's copacetic." He delighted in making the word of God plain and engaging for all to understand. His favorite scripture was Psalm 27 (KJV): "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?" He often asked the question, “Can you go to heaven where you’re sitting?”

Elder Mitchell earned his Bachelor of Science in Education in 2011 and Master of Science in Educational Leadership from Texas A & M University in Commerce, Texas, in 2014. He also received his Superintendent Certification in 2019 from Lamar University where he also earned a list of honor awards. He worked in various capacities over the years but was most dedicated to working in the educational system as an educator and Culinarily Arts teacher at Corsicana High School and as an Assistant Principal for Life School and Carroll Elementary School. He held numerous other degrees and certifications.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jack Mitchell; mother, Roberta Mitchell Hawley; mother-in-law; Shirley Mae Tisdale; sisters - Velora Carolyn Yates, Paulette Hildreth, and Betty Mitchell; and brothers - Jack Mitchell, Jr., Rufus Mitchell, and Byron Mitchell.

Elder Mitchell leaves a host of loved ones to cherish precious memories, including his loving wife of 36 years, Missionary Sherry Mitchell; daughters - Miisha Mitchell, Shambrica Williams, Kierstien West, Brittany Mitchell, and Mikandrea Askew; sons - Michael Deon Hill, Roderick Hill, and Jared Mitchell; sons-in-law, Cedric West and Julian Askew IV; sisters, Sandra Gail Dixon and Margaret Ann Mitchell Duffie; and sister-in-law, Valerie Jefferson; brother, Troy Mitchell; brothers-in-law, David Tisdale, Jr., Marcus Tisdale, and Jerrold Jefferson; father-in-law, David Leon Tisdale; 13 grandchildren; and a plethora of nieces, nephews, and cousins. He also leaves special friends - Superintendent Mark and Carrie Clemons, Joseph and Debbie Crain, Bobbie and Lisa Clemons, Ronnie and Margaret Holliness, Anthony and Greta Sims, Elder Odell Armstrong, Cheryl Murdock, Tommy Ridley, Terri Doggett, and James and Karen Rodgers; the staff from Corsicana Independent School District; Pentecost Church of God in Christ; and a host of beloved family and friends.
