George Edward Ashford III passed away on May 27, 2026, at the age of 66. Born on August 5, 1959, in Columbia, South Carolina, George built a life defined by conviction, presence, humor, and deep love for the people around him. He made his home in Dallas, where he left a lasting mark both professionally and personally.
George graduated from Lake Highlands High School in Dallas in 1977 before earning a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and Government from East Texas State University. He later received his Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the University of Houston Law Center in 1984. For more than 40 years, George served as a criminal defense attorney, earning the respect of the legal community and clients through his sharp mind, steady confidence, and unwavering belief in standing up for others. Among his many accomplishments, he became the first African American attorney placed on the Capital Wheel in Dallas County — a milestone that reflected not only professional excellence, but the barriers he quietly and powerfully helped break along the way.
George was also deeply committed to creating opportunities for others, especially young people who simply needed someone to believe in them. He helped establish programs focused on helping minority youth clear their records and find a path forward, a cause that remained especially close to his heart throughout his career. He believed strongly in second chances, mentorship, and using his position to uplift others and strengthen his community.
More than 40 years ago, George met the love of his life, Vanessa. What began there grew into a marriage that spanned 39 years and became the foundation of their family. Together, they built a life rooted in loyalty, partnership, laughter, and unwavering support for one another. George set a powerful example for his children, family, and friends of what it meant to be a devoted husband and true partner — showing through both words and actions the importance of love, respect, and commitment through every season of life.
To those who knew him best, George was a man of rhythm, balance, and genuine connection. Music was always close to him, whether through the sound of his bass guitar, a favorite song filling the room, or the joy he found simply listening and sharing it with others. He loved golf for the peace and challenge it brought him, and yoga for the balance it gave his spirit. A proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., George valued brotherhood, service, and community throughout his life. He was also a loyal fan of the Dallas Cowboys and Dallas Mavericks, always enjoying the camaraderie and conversations that came with cheering on his teams. He carried himself with both strength and calm — someone who could command a courtroom and still make the people he loved feel completely at ease.
George was preceded in death by his parents, George E. Ashford Jr. and Bertina Ashford.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Vanessa Monconduit Ashford; his three children (all attorneys!), Jayde Ashford, Candace Williams (Hank Williams), and Zachary Ashford (Megan Ashford); his grandsons, Noah Ashford and Trevor Williams; his aunts, Patsy Holmes and Doris McCollough; and a host of sisters and brothers-in-law, cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was deeply proud of his family, and there was no role he cherished more than being a husband, father, and grandfather.
Those who loved George will remember his presence most of all — the conversations, the laughter, the wisdom, the music, and the way he made people feel seen. His legacy lives on not only in his accomplishments but in the family he loved fiercely and the countless lives he impacted along the way. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in memory of George Ashford III to the North Star Mentoring Program of Mentoring Brother 2 Brother. George believed in the importance of encouragement, opportunity, and positive role models. Contributions made in his honor will help provide mentorship and support to young men as they navigate life's challenges and pursue their potential.
