George Everett Nottingham III

He was a good man, such a nice man. Everybody said so. All his neighbors would tell you that.

His family roots trace back to the Eastern Shore of Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Everett Nottingham, Jr., and Evelyn Marie Smith, both natives of the Eastern Shore.

George was born in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1951. He grew up there and graduated from Norview High School in 1969. He went to work for Virginia National Bank in Norfolk and began his career in computer programming. He met his future wife at the bank, Vel Baker of Portsmouth, Virginia. They married in September 1973 and bought their first home in Chesapeake, Virginia.

In 1979, George was recruited by the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas and joyfully found himself moving to the Lone Star State, the home of his favorite football team, the Dallas Cowboys. He and Vel made their home in Garland, Texas, and he continued his career in computer programming. Over the years, he also worked for AT&T, EDS, and finally Bank of America in Plano, Texas. He retired in 2016.

George enjoyed fishing off the pier and spending days at the beach in Ocean View. He took pride in maintaining his vehicles, especially his 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe. He loved pancakes for breakfast, corn dogs from the Texas State Fair, Texas BBQ, and the lasagna at Regino’s in Norfolk. He enjoyed all kinds of seafood, but especially Blue crab from the Chesapeake Bay.

George worked hard in his career, but his focus, his priority, was always his home and family. He was devoted to his son, Brenton George Nottingham of Fort Worth, Texas, and to his daughter, Brooke Nottingham Howell, who now resides in Detroit, Michigan. He was always there for his children, and he attended every school play, every dance recital, every band concert, and every football game. He proudly watched both graduate from the University of North Texas and flourish in their professional careers.

Molly, his feisty West Highland White Terrier, was his faithful companion over the last fifteen years. She followed him everywhere and loved riding in the front seat with him while running errands. Though not a cuddler, Molly often snuggled next to him. She stayed by his side as he struggled with a debilitating illness over the last few years.

 He was a good man, such a nice man. Everybody said so.
