Hershel Nisby was born on April 29, 1948, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Dan and Henrietta Nisby. On April 2, 2026, Hershel went home to be with the Lord. While our hearts grieve, we take comfort in knowing that he is now at peace, resting in the presence of God he loved so dearly. From an early age, Hershel carried himself with a calm spirit and a kind heart. He completed his primary and secondary education in New Orleans and went on to attend Southern University at New Orleans, where he earned his degree in Mathematics.
On August 31, 1974, Hershel married the love of his life, Kathleen Clayton. Their marriage was a beautiful example of commitment, partnership, and enduring love. Together, they built a life centered on faith and family, raising two daughters, Nneka and Jamila. As a husband and father, Hershel was steady, loving, and present—a quiet provider and protector whose actions spoke volumes.
Hershel dedicated 30 years of his professional life to AT&T (formerly South Central Bell), where he worked faithfully until his retirement on July 7, 2005. After retiring, he and Kathleen began a new chapter in Dallas, Texas. There, they became members of North Dallas Community Bible Fellowship in 2008, where Hershel continued to grow in his faith and serve others.
He was a kind man—gentle in spirit, thoughtful in his words, and sincere in his actions. He was quiet, but his presence was powerful. You didn’t have to wonder what he stood for—you could see it in the way he lived. He loved his family deeply, and he showed that love not just in what he said, but in what he did every single day.
Hershel loved the Lord. His faith was not something he wore on the surface—it was something that guided him, grounded him, and gave him peace. He lived a life rooted in discipleship and devotion, walking faithfully with God and setting an example for those around him. His life reminded us that you don’t have to be the loudest voice to have the greatest impact—you just have to be faithful.
And for those who knew him well, you also knew his love for music—especially playing the trumpet. There was something beautiful about that. The same quiet, steady nature he carried in life could be heard in the notes he played—expressive, and full of heart.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and faith through those who will carry his memory forward: his beloved wife, Kathleen Nisby; his daughters, Jamila Nisby and Nneka "Nikki" Nisby-Harris (Rufus); his granddaughter, Kinley Harris; his sisters, Emelda Victor, Geraldine Addison, Julia Anise Thomas, Dorothy Johnson, and Lois Nisby-Hall; and a host of family and loved ones whose lives were touched by his quiet strength and kindness.
Well done, good and faithful servant.
