Maizie Helen (Stell) Orr

Maizie Helen (Stell) Orr was born on March 23, 1931, to William T. Stell and Nellie B. Gower Stell in Ennis, Texas. She was the tenth of twelve children born to this union. On July 8, 2020, in Dallas, Texas, Maizie transitioned to eternity with her Lord.  

She graduated salutatorian from George Washington Carver High School and received a one year scholarship to Huston-Tillotson University.  She transferred to attend Prairie View A&M University where she earned a Bachelors degree in Business. She also earned a Master of Education degree from Webster University, St. Louis, MO.  Maizie enjoyed a longtime career in education, teaching middle school students throughout California, Georgia, Missouri, Texas, and Virginia. She even taught abroad in Germany and Ethiopia. 

On August 15, 1953, Maizie married the love of her life, Clyde H. Orr. To their union, three beautiful children were nurtured and loved. The two remained united for almost 67 years until her transition. 

As her husband was stationed in many places during his 22 years of service in the United States Army, Maizie was privileged to reside in many places throughout her life. She lived more than 35 years in Missouri where she was a faithful member of Antioch Baptist Church. There, she took part in various ministries and initiatives, including the Deaconess Ministry and ABC Couples Club. She also became a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. on March 26, 1999 with the St. Louis Alumnae Chapter.  Maizie had a heart for service which was manifested in her participation on the Mental Health Board and Annie Malone Board among others. She served as strong ombudsman for nursing home residents in the state of Missouri. She was also a docent at the St. Louis Museum of History where she delightfully shared her love of history. 

Upon relocating to Texas, she united with New Hope Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Ronald Jones. She enjoyed attending Sunday School and serving on the Health Committee. Maizie's faith never wavered and she remained devoted to God, church and Christian principles.  

Among many hobbies, Maizie enjoyed crossword puzzles, sudoku and dominoes.  She was an avid bridge player. She also delighted in museums and traveling. She most loved spending time with family. Affectionately regarded as "Mai" by her husband, Maizie will be fondly remembered for her selfless nature, humorous and quick wit, and generous spirit.  

She was preceded in death by nine of her siblings and her daughter-in-law, Cortina Orr. Those left to cherish lasting memories and continue her legacy of love include her loving husband, Clyde Hugh Orr; children: Cheryl Diane Orr, Dr. Rodney Hugh Orr (Enid), and Pamela Susan Washington (Kevin); grandchildren: Marissa C. Brown (Marcus), Ariel M. Moore (Kenneth), Bradley H. Orr (Leslie), and Mark K. Washington; siblings, Imogene Moreland (French) and William Stell (Rebecca); and a host of beloved nieces and nephews as well as relatives and friends.
