Maria Velez Obituary

Maria Velez was born in Morelos, Mexico on August 16, 1958. Surrounded by her loving family, Maria passed away on June 4, 2024.

Affectionately known as “Doña Mari”, “Cookie”, “Mari”, and “Doña”, Maria was a devout member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Garland, Texas.

She raised three daughters and came to this country to create a better life for her family. She got to travel by plane and train; she enjoyed the snow, beach, and rainy days. She watched her daughters and grandchildren graduate, but most importantly, she watched her Texas Rangers win the World Series.

In addition to being a devout member of the church, Maria never missed mass or prayer. She loved to watch the Texas Rangers, work on embroidery gifts for her family, and assist in her grandchildren’s school and sports events.

Maria will be missed for her beautiful, brave, strong, generous, and selfless nature. Her loving spirit will be forever cherished by all who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her father, Jose Velez; mother, Flora Avilez; brother, Mauricio Velez Avilez; sister, Graciela Velez Avilez; and grandchildren, Alex Solis and Aryam Contreras Solis.

Those left to cherish sweet memories include her husband, Eliodoro Solis; daughters - Mirna Arroyo, Mayra Ivonne Solis, and Nancy Solis Velez; her grandchildren - Sam, Katherine, Charlie, David, Kassandra, Diana, Heather, Anthony, and Cruz; her great-grandchildren, Bryson and baby girl; and a host of brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and friends. She was loved by all who knew her.

We say goodbye to her as a champion who was able to overcome many stages of her illness and always be grateful for the blessings that God gave her every day she lived. On behalf of her daughters, we would like to thank everyone for the love they gave her and for accompanying us in sending her home.
