Meredith Jean (Jennings) Ellington was born on November 7, 1942, to Obet Jennings, Sr. and Nellie Mae (Twitty) Jennings in Dayton, Ohio. She transitioned to eternity with her Lord on November 25, 2022, in Dallas, Texas.
Affectionately regarded as “Mert”, Meredith attended Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School and later graduated from Dayton Adult High School in Dayton, Ohio in 1974. She enjoyed being a homemaker, math tutor, entrepreneur, church mother, and neighborhood watch leader.
On April 16, 1960, Meredith married the love of her life, Jethro Jerry Ellington, Jr. They loved and nurtured three beautiful children. The two remained united in holy matrimony until his transition in 2012.
Among many hobbies, Meredith delighted in cooking, baking, upholstering, mentoring young ladies, tutoring youth, caring for children, gardening, and traveling. She loved her family and was a wonderful and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Meredith accepted Christ at an early age. She was a longtime pillar member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church of Dayton, Ohio, where she served faithfully from its inception. She truly loved serving her community and church family. She enjoyed giving her time, talent, and treasures to the Westwood / Roosevelt Community, the Ellington Family Club, and within her neighborhood offering counsel to those in need.
Meredith will be fondly remembered for her caring, supportive, and loving nature. Her kind spirit will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Meredith was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jethro Jerry Ellington, Jr.; daughter, Bonita Jennings Williamson; parents, Obet Jennings, Sr. and Nellie Mae (Twitty) Jennings; sisters, Audrey Jennings and Patricia McDonald; father-in-law, Jethro Ellington, Sr.; mother-in-law, Sarah Ellington; brother-in-law, Frank Ellington, Sr.; sister-in-law, Helen Ellington; brother-in-law, Issac Ellington, Sr.; sister-in-law, Lila "Rose" Ellington; nephew, Frank Ellington, Jr.; and nephew, Issac “Clyde” Ellington, Jr.
Those left to cherish precious memories include her children, Robert Lee “Bobby” Ellington and Jeffery Jerry Ellington (Vanessa); brother, Obet "Butch" Jennings, Jr.; godsister, Joyce Dewberry; goddaughter, Latasha "Totty" Stevens; godson, Marvin Miller (Sonja); grandchildren - Allen Williamson, Jr., Bryan Williamson (Catherine), Desmond Jackson Ellington, Danielle Smith, and Janee’ Ellington; great-grandchildren, Bianca and Zuri Williamson; sister-in-law, Ava Hodge (Tommy); sister-in-law, Annette Ellington; nieces - Caroline Hill (Keith), Renita McDonald, Lisa LeRoy (Anthony), Aretha Jones (Nate), Ashley Jennings, Sarah Beatty, Dolletta Beatty, and Ashley Beatty; nephews - Larry McDonald, Greg Jackson, Chris Hill, Michael Ellington, Eric Ellington, Derrick Ellington, David Ellington, Steven Ellington, Anthony Jennings, and Brandon Jennings; cousins, Caroline Jones and Sylvester "Rocky" Gaston; dear friends - Betty Davis (Willie), Bobbie Boggs, Daniel Gooden, and Shirley Sibert; Jennifer's Angels Caregivers; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, and friends.
