Shyrlei Ghene (Nickerson) Oglesby was born on July 26, 1934, to the union of Charles and Della Nickerson in Chicago, Illinois. She was a member of the AME faith and later attended St. Ansalum Catholic School. Upon graduating with honors from Calumet High School in Chicago, Illinois, she immediately went to work for the Social Security Administration.
Shyrlei married Joseph D. Johnson, an Army veteran of the Korean War from Greenville, Texas. To this union, two beautiful children were born, Gregory and Julaine. When the marriage dissolved, the children were loved and nurtured by their maternal grandmother, Della Nickerson, while Shyrlei continued her career at the Social Security Administration. Shyrlei later married Harold Oglesby in 1977. The two remained united in holy matrimony until his transition in 2001.
Shyrlei united with the Christ Universal Temple of Chicago, Illinois, in 1994. Upon moving to Texas, she attended First Baptist Church of Hamilton Park, where she delighted in hearing the Male Chorus sing.
Shyrlei went to be with her Lord and Savior on January 7, 2026. Those left to cherish precious memories include her son, Gregory Johnson (Lillian) of Chicago, Illinois; her daughter, Julaine Redmond (Floyd Jr.) of Garland, Texas; her grandchildren, Lavance, Mario, Fumeiko, Keyonea, Toneisha, Justin, and Angel; her great-grandchildren, Andrea, Jordyn, Johanna, Braylon, Chance, Anaya, Ryder, Erza, Ayana, and Autumn; and a host of other relatives and friends.
