In 1956, Thomas graduated from Beach High School in Savannah. He went on to attend Tennesee State University and North Texas State University. Thomas enjoyed a career that spanned over 28 years at General Motors. He began in assembly and retired as a line foreman.

On July 18, 1959, Thomas married the love of his life, Margaret Louise Keller. The two loved and nurtured two daughters and a son. They remained united in holy matrimony for 65 years until his transition.
