Very quietly and peacefully on Tuesday, December 9, 2020, almighty God, in his infinite wisdom, gently closed the eyes of our beloved, Verna Ann Shockley Johnson. Verna was the daughter of Jacob James Shockley and Bertha Benson born on September 16, 1927 in Lincoln, Delaware.
Affectionately regarded as "Bunny", Verna attended P. S. Dupont High School in Lincoln, Delaware. Upon graduating from P. S. Dupont, she went on to serve as a domestic worker and later became a Certified Nurse Assistant for 37 years until her retirement. Verna delighted in cooking and collecting coupons. She loved the challenge of a new recipe but was famous for her sweet potato pie and all her many delicious specialties. With her compassionate and reliable spirit, Verna was known for her independence and hard work. In 2017, she united with Mount Hebron Missionary Baptist Church until her demise.
Verna was predeceased by her parents, Jacob Shockley and Bertha E. Hamilton; husband of 25 years, John H. Johnson; two sisters, Iris Wiggins and Hilda Smith; and brothers: Randolph Hamilton, Benjamin Hamilton, Joseph Hamilton, and Leon Lofland.
Those left with memories to cherish forever include her children, Dolores Green of Wylie, Texas, and John Johnson of Jersey City, New Jersey; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Beaulah Warren (Bob) and Mary Hinson; brother, Reverend Donald Hamilton; and host of relatives and friends.
